Evidence for Defence 
H.J. B. Clark being duly sworn says that about five weeks since Mabane Christman and Elijah J. Clark had some words and that since there had been a feeling on the part of Mabane Christman to insult Elijah J. Clark.

Geo. J. Freelan being duly sworn says that Mabane Christman had lived with his sister Mrs Pursley for two (2) years. That a short time since Mabane Christman attacked him in his own lane taking hold of him by the Arms saying God Damn you I will fight you. He has frequently said that he would do as he Damed pleased.
Robert E. Hoell being duly sworn says that Mabane Christman told him of his difficulty with Squire Freelan and that he threw him and left him in the corner of a fence says that this man Christman bears the name of being saucy and impudent does not know of his being in any difficulty previous to this one 

W.H. Faucett being duly sworn says that the character of Mabane is that of being impudent and saucy knows nothing personally of his being in any difficulty previous to this one says Clarks character is good.

A. Moore being duly sworn says that the reputation of Mabane is being saucy and impudent and Elijah J. Clark's character is good. says that Mabane was driven from his former neighborhood for cohabitating with a soldiers wife (a white woman) the Soldier being in prison at this time.
