State of North Carolina Rockingham County I William Neal (Col) of the County and the State aforesaid make oath that Lewis Neal is my son. This affiant further swears in 1865 soon after the termination of the War, Lewis was bound by Capt Teal to Thomas Johnson Esqr., that some short time thereafter this affiant and Jim Neal the half brother of Lewis went to Greensboro & upon mine & Jim's statement as to my being the father. Capt Teal rescinded the binding & placed the boy Lewis then about eleven years of age in the possession of this affiant the further to raise. This affiant further swears that he has had the boy son since until some few weeks ago when Jim Neal his half brother came and took him out of his possession as the said boy had got now to be worth something having grown up to be able to work. This affiant swears he had fed and clothed the boy son since the summer & states that as an additional reason To his being his father why he should bear his son Lewis Wm his X mark Neal Subsented & sworn to before me this 28th day of Feby 1868 T.J.
