Mulberry Island
March 25, 1868

David F. Ellington, Esq.

My dear Sir: Rawley Strong has been discharged by E.F. Scales, because he went to the speaking on Saturday. This thing must be stopped at once. They are only fueling their way, & the next thing will be to order all voters to stay from the polls. Hear his statement & submit it with his contract to Capt Hildebrandt & get him to take such action as he may deem proper. Please attend to this at once and block this game of the secessionist to intimidate colored men.

Yours truly,
Thomas Settle
