Selectman A.L. Holmes found the following note inside his Thanksgiving turkey: "Will you kindly send a little boy, nine years old, one dozen lead pencils. I go to school and need a good many. I live on a farm and have to run after the turkeys." He sent the pencils, a jacknife and a note to the winner wishing many happy returns of the day. The note was from a town in northern Vermont.
