Mr Baker & Myself, have upon a rented farm in our employment 50 "Freedmen". Of this number 12 are under the age of 9 years & on the same place there is an additional family of 5 - three children & two adults making in all 55 persons. I was assured before employing any of these persons by the Superintendent of the Freedmen's Bureau that a teacher would be furnished upon application to the proper authority. Consequently I promised these persons upon hiring them that I should make the application & assured them that they might with certainty hope to have a good school on the place by which all could be more or less benefited. Now that the colord people are free my honest conviction is that it is to the interest of both classes, the White & Colord, to elevate colord persons intellectually & moraly as speedily
