Sir,
Extract.
I think I can discover a growing improvement in the Freedmen of this Country. They have begun to know that they are thrown upon their own resources and are trying to do something in the way of schooling their children. We have one colored school established in this place with about twenty scholars, which is taught by a white lady by the name of Sarah Magen. I think during the fall after the business season is over the schools will number at least forty if not more. They have received no encouragement of the white people whatever, but on the contrary they seem hostile toward the freedmen. Some of them think yet they will be paid for their slaves or be allowed to hold them in bondage, particularly in Izard County.
Very Respectfully
Yours &c
