Bureau Refugees Freedmen & Abandoned Lands
Office General Sup't. & Provost Marshal,
Arkansas River District,
Pine Bluff, Ark., February 3 1867
W.M.Colby
Gen. Supt. Schools
Little Rock Ark.
Sir: I herewith transmit "Report of Schools" for this District for January. The confining duties of the Supt. at this season of the year have prevented a careful inspection of these schools, and to his regret has as well permitted little effort to introduce schools upon plantations.
The presence of Mr. Miller, your assistant, to look after this matter thoroughly will supply the greatly needed aid and which good will speedily be accomplished.
A large number of our abject planters are desirous of having these schools. and need no urging when the opportunity is offered to some teachers. Among other classes much earnest effort will be necessary to break down the deep-seated prejudice existing against "Yankee Schools"
