tale of woe, and I forbear further remarks. On Thursday the 4th of April we arrived in this place and found Dr. Wright still here but he left Friday morning for Maj Jones plantation occupied by J. D. Smith. It was decided us (the grand council of 4) that I should stop in Washington and Hazledine was to go to Maj Hawkin's plantation. I found Maj Thibaut the right man in the right place and recd from him all the assistance I could ask. I found the freedom overjoyed to know a teacher had come and they were anxious to have the school commence at once, but the trouble was to get a house as the knew one could find was the baptist church that has long been vacated by the church, and is now controlled by one Barney Green. To this Mr. Green I presented myself made known my business and desired to rent the house until the new schoolhouse could be completed but he insultingly told me that before the Federal Government should have the house he would burn it, at the same time, advising to quit the business &c, these facts I communicated to Maj Thibaut who refered them to Col Mulligan commanding at this place, Who settled the matter by sending for Green and telling him that he should take the house, and if he dared to burn it or incite any mutiny against it he would hang him. Having thus secured the house on yesterday the 8th I
