I am directed by the Assistant Commissioner to furnish for your information the following extract from the report of Mr. J. W. Carhart, Agent for Columbia County, for the month of August, 1867.

"I have taken some steps towards building a church and school house for the colored people of this place. A citizen of Magnolia has donated three acres of land to the society, to be held by them so long as it is used for church and school purposes, and I now have four hundred dollars subscribed by the colored people, payable the 1st day of November, 1867. It is hoped that the building can be completed by the
