that the freedmen are too poor to afford him a competent salary I would recommend that he be appointed a teacher and that an appropriation be made for the rent of a building and his services. He will receive about $20 from the freedmen, per month, out of which he at present has to pay for the rent of a room, for the school.
   I return to the Lewisville tomorrow and consequently can do nothing more towards it. I have obtained the consent of Mr D.L. Moore of Sheboygan Wis., who is a merchant and the P.M. here, to receive the funds and disburse them should there be a monthly appropriation. I learn he is entirely responsible and is perfectly loyal.
