My Sabbath school is interesting. More adults come in than last summer. Have spent some time looking up the destitute. Gave to two boys cloth for a shirt, they were litterally a bundle of rags. Appeared grateful & brought me 3 qts. pecans. found a woman with 4 small children shivering over the fire, the children with only one garment each on, & that ragged. Cut out 2 garments for each child. The mother said I thank you for these, the first warm day the children shall get you some nuts. Which they did. She had not worked well through the summer, said " I am free mistress did not use to work." Cold & hunger has shown her, her folly. Called on one poor crippled woman, made & gave her an article of clothing I knew she much needed. She said little but tears stood in her eyes. She brought me five eggs saying we keep chickens. I said no, no but perceiving her feelings would be hurt, took them. She manages somehow
