Conway County Arkansas, Sept. 30th 1869

Wm. M. J Colby

Dear Sir, yours of the 25th ult came to hand on the 28th and I went to the colored school teacher the next day with the blank report to get it filled out and he returned the same to one this morning, I think he made a mistake about the time the school is to be closed, he has 14 days to teach yet before his term of three months is out, the balance I think is very near correct; a good many of the colored people complained to me, thinking their children did not learn enough, they are wrong in that, there never had been a colored school here before and they expected their children had to learn every thing in a few months and with an irregular attendance at that. We have a school meeting by next Saturday and I hope the people will make arrangements for longer terms, three months is not long enough; every obstacle is but in the way to make the schools suc'cesfull by the respectability (you know what I mean by the expression) but I hope we will succeed yet I remain respectfully your obedient servant.
