State of Louisiana
Know all Men by these Presents:
That I, I.F. Lapice of Point Coupe La by my agents G.E. Girardey
& Co for, and in consideration of the sum of Eight Hundred dollars paid by James Roberts of Jefferson City, La. do by these presents, bargain, sell, convey, transfer and deliver unto the said James Roberts a certain negro man named "Cato" a black aged about 40 years a slave for life, sold as having run away, otherwise fully guaranteed against the vices and maladies presented by the laws of this state.

To Have and to Hold, the said negro man Cato unto the said James Roberts and his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever: and I the said I.F. Lapice do bind my self, any heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, to protect and defend said property against all claim or claims whatsoever.

Dated at New Orleans, this Twenty Eighth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine.
