KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS,

THAT we Joseph L. Lock and Charles Davis doing business under the firm name and style of Lock & Davis of the State and County aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of Four Hundred and Sixty five Dollars
to them in hand paid, at at before the sealing and delivery of these Presents, by Henry P Goldsmith of Chambers County and State of Alabama the receipt of which we do hereby acknowledge; have bargained and sold, and by these Presents, do bargain, sell and deliver, unto the said Henry P Goldsmith all our right, title interest and claim of in & to a certain Negroe man slave by the name of Joe or Joseph, about nineteen years of age & of high mulattoe color--
To have and to hold the said Negroe man Joe or Joseph as a slave.

unto the said Henry P. Goldsmith his Executors, Administrators and Assigns, to his and their only proper use and behoof forever.  And we the said Lock & Davis their Heirs, Executors and Administrators, the said bargained premises, unto the said Henry P Goldsmith his Executors, Administrators and Assigns, form and against all persons, shall and will WARRANT AND FOREVER DEFEND by these Presents.

In Witness Whereof, we have hereunto set our Hand and Seal 
Dated at Savannah the sixteenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-four and in the sixty ninth year of the Independence of the United States of America.
