Dear Mrs. Hartford:

When I had the pleasure of speaking to your husband the other day, he told me that you had the photograph of the Vermeer portrait which I had given to Miss Bogert to show you.

As this is the only print I have in America, you would oblige me greatly by having it returned to me, providing this is no trouble for you.

I hope to have a chance to show you the picture when you come back to New York, as the photograph does not do it justice at all, and it is undoubtedly one of the rarest and finest Dutch pictures on the market.

We have just been informed that the famous Czernin Vermeer, which was the other Vermeer we all thought would be available some day, has been stopped in Austria by the government.
