Dear Mr. Havemeyer,

I hope you will excuse the liberty I take in writing you as I do, but I have just received a letter from Europe asking me to inquire whether you would be willing to part with the picture by Pieter de Hooch "Two Young Couples Drinking Wine".

As I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I am writing this letter very reluctantly, but on the other hand, collectors' tastes change very often - and this picture might be one in which you have lost interest.

With my kind regards,
Please believe me
Yours sincerely,

(Rene Seligmann)
