Dear Mr. Havemeyer:

We have had an inquiry from Paris asking us what became of the "Portrait of Cherubini" by Ingres which is known as being part of the Havemeyer Collection.

We have looked for this picture in the Metropolitan Museum, and I also remember asking Mrs. Watson Webb last year if she knew where the picture was, but she didn't.

Would you be kind enough to let me know whether any member of your family is still the owner of this picture, which in view of its importance, I feel should be easily traced.

With anticipated thanks,

Kindly believe me

Yours very sincerely,

(René Seligmann)
