On the 17th August, Miss Sallie Moore, freedwoman, being in my employ as Child's Nurse, was assaulted, & a battery perpetrated on her by by Mrs Caroline Mays, the land lady of the "Marshal House" a regular public Hotel here, at which, with my family, I am domiciled, paying so much per month board for my party, inclusive, of course, of my aforesaid servant. On complaint being formally made to me, here, at my Office, by the girl, I as usual in all such instances, referred the case to a magistrate, when a proper warrant was issued in the premises. A few days after, on the return to the village of the husband of the Lady above named, who happened to be away at the time of the assault, he called on me, & on joked of the Girl having been insolent to his Wife, said I would have to discharge her. I frankly told him, that as she did not suit me in several particulars, I intended to change her so soon as I could find a proper person to take her place; which he seemed satisfied with.
