General,
I deem it my duty to state that I was yesterday informed by a freedman that recently Lieut Liedtke, while intoxicated, twice shot at another freedman, endangering his life.  His statement was interrupted by the sudden and alarming illness of one of my near connections, and is to be completed as soon as he can return.  I prefer not to delay this communication as I know not that I can act in the matter.  This is not the only instance of violence and intemperance charged against that officer.  His wife complained to me last October of his brutal violence.  I did not report him then, because they renewed friendly relations while I was awaiting information from the city as to my course.  I understand that the same scenes have been re-enacted since, once and again.  His intemperance is the subject of neighborhood gossip.  I am informed that he was so intoxicated on 14 and 15th inst as to benefit for duty on the Provost Court.  Further, it is charged and
