IB 117 H
School Department, County of Beaufort.
Beaufort, S. C. September 2nd 1869.
Dear sir: Several of the most influential and intelligent colored inhabitants of Ladies Island, S. C., have requested me to apply to the Bureau for assistance in building a school House. This Island is some 10 or 15 miles long and is very much in need of such a building in the center of its school population. The colored people have put up an excellent frame with good brick basement, and have been struggling to complete the same, but find it very hard to do so. They propose to give the land on which said building is frame stands, for school purposes and to use said house on Sundays for religious services. I have been informed by competent judges that Three Hundred Dollars ($300) will be ample to complete the same, and I now respectfully request that this sum may be appropriated from the Bureau fund for this purpose.
Very Respectfully &c.,
L.S. Langley
