I took advantage of a Government conveyance going to Canton, & was thus enabled to visit the interior of the 3d Dist, through which there is no stage route. 

There is a poor chance for a school at Mt. Pleasant. At Sulphur Springs & Greenville, a school could be started with fifty people at each place. No trouble to get a house. It is doubtful if they could be maintained after the withdrawal of the troops at those points.

With the exception of Red River & Marion Counties, no schools can be opened in the 3d District, away from the county seats. The people would not tolerate them.

Post Commanders, and reliable Citizens, assured me it would not be safe to travel alone, except, on the stage. Hence I have been unable to visit Henderson, Grayson, Wood, Upshur, Bowie & Davis Counties. Detatchments are visiting those localities frequently, which will enable me to do so, at an early day.

With reliable, & energetic teachers, & some assistance from the Bureau good schools can be opened in a
