New Haven Ct. April 5th, 1868.

Miss M. E. Shearman
Phila Pa.

Yours of the 28th of last month was duly recd. Pardon my delay in replying as I have been very busy. I was very glad to hear from Mr. S. direct but it seems beyond all possibility that I should go out into the field this spring. I can only repeat, "I love the good work." and most earnestly pray to God for its glorious prosecution and success by any and all agencies.

If it be in accordance with the will of the Blessed God I hope I may return to labor, next fall, but at present I cannot have my family. I have written to Mr. Stevenson in substance as above. I must get work nearer home than Texas if the I can. Perhaps I may be able to go out for your Ass'n next fall if you should see fit to [[strikethrough]] repeat [[[/strikethrough]] renew your offer of last September

With respect I remain
Yours in Christ
Joseph A. Nichols
