value of Spanish costumes as an aid to Spanish chronology in the first decades of the 17th century. In other words, I hope, by linking history (with its sumptuary decrees), allusions in the literature of the time, and the portraits of the day, to establish certain norms that will be helpful both to scholars of art and literature.
