Thomas COUTURE (Senlis 1815--Villiers-le-Bal 1879)

“Portrait of Monsieur Barroilhet”
Oil: 40” x 32-1/2”. Signed & dated: “T. C. 1849”

Monsieur Barroilhet was a very famous actor during the middle of the 19th century. He is seen in a three-quarter length portrait, standing, his arms folded, his head turned slightly to the left, and gazing at the spectator. His hair is rather long, and he has a mustache and a pointed beard. He wears a bluish green suit with black velvet collar and cuffs.

Thomas COUTURE was a pupil of Paul Delaroche and of Gros. He painted in 1847, his famous painting which is now in the Luxembourg Museum, entitled, "The Romans During the Decadence of the Empire".
COUTURE was the first great master of Manet.
