The Wagner enthusiasts who attend the special Wagner cycle have not insisted that some of the finest pages of "Tristan" be hacked out in order to save 20 or 30 minutes; the public has not insisted on the wretched orchestra, the second and third-rate conductors, the tasteless settings, the poor staging.

nothing. Only when Olin Downes' "Symphonic Broadcasts" was published two or three years ago did he, in reviewing the book, speak of "the largely pretentions and semi-literate gush, rich in ignorance and error"; with which Mr. Downes' predecessor had disfigured the Phil-harmonic broadcasts. Newman would have spoken five years earlier; and we may ask why Mr. Gilman waited so long. If it was important, as he said, that radio listeners who were hearing symphonic music for the first time should be assisted with correct information and discriminating comment, why did he not speak out when their minds were being filled with ignorance and gush?
Moreover, if he believed that it was important not to feed the radio public gush, why did he quote from Mr. Downes' book, ending with this passage: "Tchaikovsky was not a classicist. He had not the heroic strength and will of a Beethoven. He spoke in music as one of the insulted and injured. He was all [[next column]]
