Not just for the checks you forwarded so promptly, but particularly and especially for the charming lines which accompanied them. I am so happy to know that you are enjoying the small SAINT JEROME, and also to learn that it has been much admired. You write that Mrs. Lynch-Staunton has been thinking about my Carthusian Monks, but do I detect in-between the lines that you censor her aesthetic inclinations .... for I would not want my sedate and spiritual monks to cause a family feud ...' However, as long as you are inquiring about them in general terms for an "ordre de grandeur" as the French would put it, may I say that I have increased their price last year to $50,000 - should you recall the one I quoted you, I believe, two years ago. I am purposely writing in this vein for, as you know well, I am ready to make concessions to selected collectors - you among them, of course - as regards price and terms of payment. Were you to consider pursuing the matter, we could perhaps, by telephone, go into further details. In a day or so, I shall send you a pamphlet containing a summary of documentation and research pertaining to these marbles, to enable you to become better acquainted with their background, besides their physical beauty - which I know you admire. .../...
