ENGLISH DRAWINGS-continued.

314. May (Phil, 1864-1903) Indian ink drawing from the collections of Mrs. Russell Rea & H.C. Green:-
(1) City gent out hunting, being run-away-with by his lively horse, a huntsman shouts at him, drawn surface 2 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches, on larger cards. £5
(2) "Ramsgate, Bank Holiday, 11 a.m." Three tipsy Cockneys & a girl, signing on the front. 5 x 4 3/4 inches. £10.
(3) Full-length facing study of a tight-lipped woman, a bony hand pointing. Drawn surface 3 3/4 x 2 inches . £4.
(4) Negro minstrel, signed with initials. He is playing a banjo, 4 3/8 x 2 3/8 inches. £5.
(5) A young Jew in knickerbockers, smoking a pipe, hands in pockets, signed with initials, the drawn surface 3 1/4 x 1 1/4 inches. £4.
(6) Cherry little girl holding a hoop, wearing wide floppy hat, her body & frock formed by a windlass, inscribed by the artist "Wind-lasses." 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 inches. £3.

315. "The Medici Venus." an early 19th cent. study £3 by an English artist, pencil lightly touched with wash, the drawn surface 6 inches high, on larger sheet. Was in lot 1088 of the 1860 Lawrence-Woodburn Sale. (C.f. Sir K. Clark's The Nude, page 81).

316. Mulready (W., R.A., 1786-1863) Bistre brush, £5 an author in his study, seated at a table. 1 3/4 x 2 3/4 inches, 46 x 71 mm.

317. (? Orpen) An oil, on canvas, a pretty pastiche £15 of a young auburn-haired girl wearing an ostrich feather hat which casts a dark shadow on her eyes: she is facing the artist: head & shoulders, some-what in the style of Reaburn, very 18th century, but painted about 1900. Open or Munnings likely attributions. 11 x 9 1/4 inches, 281 x 236 mm., on stretcher, unframed. Very decorative, especially if hung underneath a wall-lamp.

318. W.Payne (circa 1800): a fine pair Pair for £25 of circular drawings in pen & ink & watercolour: Payne apparently made, in the border round each, four charming little landscapes with figures: the central figures are: a young lady " as " an angel, &, two tipsy putti with garlands. Circular, diameter 9 1/2 inches, 240 mm. This very decorative pair would suit the furnishings of an 18th century room.

319. Portrait of Alexander Pope (1688-1744) perhaps £18 by Sir G. Kneller. Black chalk touched with red, on buff paper, profile to left: at the base of the sheet the name Pope in black & gray wash imitating relief. 16 1/8 x 9 3/8 inches, 410 x 237 mm. Two folds in the paper are still visible.

320. Poynter (Sir Edward, 1836-1919) Black chalk, £6 touched with white, on blue-gray paper, with the artist's stamp, Lugt 874. Feet & calves of a man, seen from slightly above, facing, the drawn surface 8 x 5 1/2 inches, on a much larger sheet. 

321. Poynter (see above) A study of drapery, black £5 & white chalk on light brown paper, with the artist's mark, 11 1/2 x 9 inches, 292 x 228 mm.

322. Ross (Sir W. C., R.A., 1794-1860) Coloured £24 wash & bistre brush, heads of three young girls eagerly watching something. 12 1/4 x 16 3/8 inches, 310 x 416 mm.

324. Shelley (Samuel, 1750-1808) Watercolour, £20
signed with initials. Two guardian angles with spear, protect nude sleeping lovers from an immense toad-like creature 8 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches, 212 x 162 mm.

325. Sime (S. H., 1867-c. 1920) Drawings in watercolour & gouache from the H. C. Green collection: all approximately 14 x 10 1/4 inches (part 6 is oblong): in each one are bright flashes of the wild imagination of this neglected (because so-little-known) artist:
(1) Against a background of mountain tops, a centaur wrestles with a wild-eyed winged woman. £10.
(2) The worship of Mammon: a group of three humans at the foot of a rugged mountain with the rugged unpleasing features & arms of Mammon. £10.
(3) A Christ-like figure with halo walks in the narrow streets of a town, between old gabled houses: there are no humans, but numerous pigs loll at windows, wander in the street & one stands looking out of a doorway. £8.
(4) Dante & Beatrice & a gray-robed figure at the edge of the forest, in the distance a small landscape. £8.
(5) Night in a forest, in the glow of a fire, wild figures dance, at the foot a tree-topped cliff are enormous fantastic figures seen in profile, they tower above a nun & another woman. £12.
(6) Cottages, houses, towers, built on the steep slopes of a hill topped with trees & tumbling clouds: a steeply arched bridge is high over a cleft between two parts of the village, in the water in foreground a high-pooped ship is approached by numerous figures. £25.
 
326. Smith (John Raphael, 1752-1812) £10 Three-quarter portrait of a seated gentlemen, pencil, 9 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches, 250 x 210 mm. 

327. Smith (John "Warwick,"1749-1831) £25 Water-colour, probably of the 1780's, overgrown ruins & two men on a road bordered by a stream, in Italy. 11 3/4 x 17 inches, 299 x 430 mm. A fine & impressive watercolour. 

328. Spain: Three fine sepia brush drawings, c. 1830, 5 x 7 1/2 inches, 125 x 186 mm. (Part 3 is the same size but upright):-
(1) Royal Palace, Madrid. £5. 
(2) Toledo, looking up to the town, with the bridge in foreground. £5. 
(3) Burgos Cathedral, an exterior view. £5. 
All three are enlivened with numerous figures in foreground & are very decorative. 
329. Steer (P. Wilson, 1860-1942) £55
 Oil painting on canvas, "Adolescence," a standing full-length young girl, nude, looking at her-self in a tall psyche mirror in a richly-furnished drawing-room. 27 x 15 inches, 685 x 380 mm. From the collection of Mrs. E. Hesslein of New York, she was the elder sister of Sir William Rothenstein, born about 1870. 

330. Steurt (Sir James, 5th baronet, of Allan Bank, Berwickshire, born in Rome 1779, died in Edinburgh 1849). For an important study of this lively artist see W.G. Constable's article in Print Collector's Quarterly, April 1942, about the Columbia University Avery Memorial Library album of Steuart's drawings: also Iolo Williams' Early English Watercolours, page 244. 
(1) A halt of hunters at the foot of a palace, with a distant landscape: a peacock screams on the wall, there are several hounds. Pen & ink & watercolour, 7 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches, 185 x 252 mm. £14. 
(2) A staghunt in a park with large buildings on the left. Pen & ink & coloured wash, heightened with white. 7 x 10 1/4 inches, 178 x 259 mm. £14. 
(3) Riders halted outside a town, some have dismounted. Pen & ink & coloured wash heightened with white. 6 3/8 x 9 1/4 inches, 163 x 233 mm. £12. 
(4) Riders at a ford below a Scottish castle amid trees, man in red on a white horse etc., Watercolour 5 1/2 x 7 3/8 inches, 138 x 188 mm. £10. 
(5) Horsemen after a battle, on the hill behind is an imposing fortress. Pen & ink & watercolour, 7 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, 190 x 272 mm. £10. 
(6) Cavalry trotting & cantering past an enormous triumphal arch, in turn surmounted by a large equestrian statue. Pen & ink & water-colour, 5 1/8 x 7 1/4 inches, 130 x 185 mm. £10. 
(7) A lively cavalry action with a magnificent horse & rider in centre foreground, pen & ink & watercolour. 6 3/4 x 10 inches, 171 x 254 mm. £8. 
(8) A mounted soldier followed by a foot-soldier, 2 dogs in foreground, a man seated under a tree with indications of a landscape. 4 3/4 x 7 inches, 120 x 177 mm. £8. 
(9) A very spirited 17th century calvary action, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, 140 x 217 mm. £14. 
(10) Mounted trumpeters & cavalry charging cannon, 17 century style, 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches, 147 x 221 mm. £8. 
(11) Two knights jousting, another, also mounted, sounds a trumpet, pen & ink & watercolour (& typical slight pencil sketch on verso), 5 1/2 inches x 8 3/8 inches, 140 x 212 mm. £10. 
(12) Highland chieftains drinking rather formal toasts, at table, hounds in foreground. 7 x 9 3/4 inches, 177 x 241 mm. £8. 
(13) A misty morning before the castle, mounted men in foreground, gray & blue wash, 4 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches, 108 x 148 mm. £4.
 
331. Stothard (Thomas, 1755-1834) £4 
Gray wash, maidens dance in a circle under the circle of the zodiac, 4 x 3 inches, 100 x 78 mm. From the H.S. Reitlinger collection, with his mark on verso.
 
332. Swan (John Macallan, R.A., 1847-1910) £4 
"A Baboon," black chalk, 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, 218 x 138 mm.

334. Tayler (J. Frederick, 1802-1899, studied in Paris under Vernet and Delaroche & when a very young man, worked with Bonington). £35 
A splendid watercolour of two of the wild white Chillingham bulls in an autumn wood flecked with sunlight. 19 3/4 x 28 inches, 500 x 710 mm. The two bulls occupy 3/4 of the foreground. 

336. Townshend (F.H., a "Punch" artist) £5 
Indian-ink & wash 1/2 length profile of a man, faintly inscribed Fouché, M. Leraud. Signed with initials, dated 1897. 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches, 220 x 120 mm., on a larger sheet. 

337. Van Dyck, £20 
a red chalk & gray wash drawing ascribed to him by Mr. A.E. Popham in the SKIPPE sale (lot 339, Christies 1958), full length standing Saint John the Evangelist, 6 3/4 x 3 5/8 inches, 170 x 93 mm., the corner cut, on the original Skippe mount. Formerly in the Van Haecken collection (Lugt 2517). 

338. Westall (William, A.R.A., 1781-1850) £25 
Watercolour, the Thames with Waterloo Bridge, the Shot Tower on the right, Saint Paul's to left of centre, numerous small boats in foreground. William was the pupil of his elder brother Richard. 7 x 10 3/4 inches, 178 x 272 mm. 

339. English £8 
late 18th century, pen & ink, an angry farmer threatens with his pitchfork a man who is on his knees: the wife of one of them covers the lower part of her face. Better than Woodward, but I cannot put a name to it. 4 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches, 122 x 148 mm. 

340. English, c. 1800, £ 25 
black chalk, two highly-finished studies of a man's arm on one sheet, one arm extended, the other bent, 10 5/8 x 5 7/8 inches, 270 x 148 mm.

pencil, a huntsman in profile, riding towards the left, on paper measuring 7 1/2 x 11 inches, 192 x 280 mm.

watercolour miniature of a charming boy of  about seven, standing with a hoop, white trousers under an almost-knee length tight-waisted jacket & puffed sleeves, black bow over very wide lace collar. 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, 220 x 172 mm.

black chalk, a school-boy, seated 1/2 length, profile. 8 x 6 3/4 inches, 202 x 173 mm.

I was a bit confused on the placement of the price, as it would make reading a bit confusing if you saw, say "'A £4 Baboon,"
