443. Ward (see above)
Gray wash, signed in ink: a lion family attacks two travellers with horses. The second horse is cantering away in the distance. (Gericault much admired Ward's animals when he came to England and the influence can be seen in G's drawing of a "lion attacking a horse.")40£

444. English early
The three, not separated, for 19th century: three bright watercolours and pen and ink drawings of recruits being drilled each inscribed: 7 x 17 1/2 inches, 177 x 443 mm. The recruits are unbelievably bad: there a dozen in each drawing and one patient officer: (1) "To the right, face!" (2) "March!!! Look up there!" (3) "Ready! p'sent! wait, gentlemen, wait for the word Fire,'' (but of course none of them do wait but all fire in different directions). These three amusing watercolours, wide and not very high, are admirably suited for wall-decoration, for barracks, club, stair-case of retired officer or study of historian of the wars of Wellington. £35
