8. Cambiaso (Luca, 1527-1585) Pen & ink & bistre. Mercury carries Pysche in his arms towards Olympus. 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, 347 x 242 mm. This is a variant of a favourite subject of Cambiaso: two are in the Lourve, one in Edinburgh (mine resembles the latter rather than the Lourve ones). See plate 199 & item D.1570 in the "Cat. of Ital. Drawings" in the National Gallery of Scotland 1986. And in Suida & Manning "Luca Cambasio" plates 178-179-180. £105
9. Carpioni (Giulio: Venice 1611-Verona 1674) Pen & ink & pale brown wash, with early attribution to him. A woman kneels in supplication before three arrogant young men standing beside a beached vessel. 8 x 7 inches, 203 X 178mm. £40
10. Carracci (Annibale, 1560-1609) Pen & brown ink, landscape, large tree on left, men fishing bank of river, other man in a boat, single-arch stone bridge, buildings at foot & top of steep rocks. 8 1/2 & 6 inches, 212 x 153 mm. For the style, compare "Pastoral

11. (Carracci School) Red chalk, 7 1/2 x 6 5/8, 188 x 168 mm. A group of three cupids, one lie elegantly in the left corner, one stands in the centre bearing a basket of fruit on his head, the third kneels on the right with a large jar or amphora. £60
12. Farinato (Paolo, 1524-1606) Pen & ink & bistre heightened with white, on blue paper, Saints Paul, Peter & George: the latter in center, in full armour (& in the background on the right, St. George on horseback slays the dragon). Lot91A in the Skippe[itlaics] sale at Christie's 20 Nov., 1958. (Mr. Popham had written "obviously by or of the school of Farinati"). Still on the original Skippe mount. 11 1/8 x 14 inches, 283 x 355mm. £125.
13. Farinato (see above) Pen & ink bistre: Delilah, with Samson asleep on her knees, holds her scissors in one hand, with the other hand she signals to the waiting Philistines. 10 x 7 3/4 inches, 250 x 200 mm. (Judges, 16, verses 19 & 20). £65

15. Franco (Battista, "l Semolei", 1498-1561: Venetian) Black chalk, five bulls in a meadow, the upper left corner unfinished. 8 x 9 3/8 inches, 201 x 238 mm. The inscription "del Semolei" in a contemporary hand, on verso. £65
16. Guerra (Giovanni: Modena 1544-Rom3 1618) Pen & ink & bistre, a scene of Esther: (woman before Jewish alter on which is 7-branched candlestick: 2 other women are in background: a crown lies in foreground. 8 7/8 x 6 5/8 inches, 223 x 168 mm. 24 lines of Italian MS. verse on back of the sheet. There are numerous losses of paper in the drawing which has been lightly backed. Another drawing from this Esther group, by Guerra, was recently in a London gallery. £85
17. Luini (Aurelio, 1530-1593) Pen & ink on blue paper now uniformly age-browned. Rest on the flight into Egypt, a tall angel stands behind the central figures of the Virgin & Child & indicates to Joseph the date-palm whose laden branches are bent down over Mother & Child. 8 1/2 x 7 inches, 220 x 177 mm. £48
18. Circle of C. Maratta, red chalk, "Galatea riding on 2 dolphins". (On verso, red & black chalk kneeling draped girl, a first-though sketch). 10 x 7 1/2 inches, 253 x 190 mm. £24
19. Mazzuchelli (Pietro, "il Morazzone", 1571-1626) Ink & bistre, heightened with white (partly oxydised) on green paper. Attached to the drawing is a very early note in ink "di Gioseppe d’Arpino" (=Giuseppe Cesari, cavaliere d’Arpino 1568-1640, but the drawing has the strength & nobility typical of Morazzone & is far better than d’Arpino’s work).  12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, 320 x 243 mm. The subject is Pope Saint Sylvester, seated, giving benediction: at his feet the dragon which he subdued, at the request of the Emperor Constantine: the dragon had been killing 300 persons daily: accompanied by two priests, Sylvester went down into the dragon's pit & rendered it harmless by binding cords round its jaws. In the Pierpont Morgan Library there is a drawing of Sylvester subduing the dragon: see item & plate 31 of "Drawings from New York collections--the 17th century in Italy", 1967. 20. (After Michelangelo) "Dream of Human Life." An early study, black chalk, 16 1/2 X 11 inches, 411 X 282 mm., same size as the Weimar original to which this conforms closely, but differs from the London Nat: Gall: painted version. An angel with a trumpet flies down to the nude youth whose hands rest on the globe above the face-masks: in the background are scenes of sloth, avarice, gluttony, sex. My drawing comes from the collections of R. Cosway, J.C. Robinson, Sir R. Mond (Lugt nos. 628, 1433 & Suppl. 2813a) with their marks. The Phaidon Press reproduces, full-page, Weimar version in Goldscheider's "Michelangelo, selected drawings", 1951) plate 93, & devotes pages 49 & 50 to the drawing, with references to Dante etc. Loss of (blank) paper at top left has been repaired. My drawing was no. 161 in the Mond Catalogue. Watermark=crossbow in circle with 6-pointed star at top. 21. Mitelli (Agostino: Bologna 1609-Madrid 1660) Pen & ink & bistre: design for a chimney overmantel with twisted columns, lion's head, winged nude female, & in a frame a drawing of the death-ride of Marcus Curtius, against the background of a military camp. The sheet is backed with another sheet of a later period (with drawing of double-headed crowned eagle). 9 3/8 X 6 7/8 inches, 239 X 174 mm. £90
22. Mitelli (Agostino, 1609-1660) Pen & ink & bistre, a design for an elaborate wall-decoration with the Medici arms at top (the centre blank). Two seated & two standing female figure (one holds a crown, another a book): there are four vanquished prisoners & four small scenes of naval interest, the central figures rather rubbed. 8 1/8 X 5 7/8 inches, 208 X 148 mm. £52
23. Nebbia (Cesare, d'Orvieto, 1536-1614) Pen & ink & bistre lightly squared for a painting. Christ led away from Pilate. Square=6 1/2 inches, 163 millimetres, within framing-lines on a larger sheet: a few skilful repairs. £75
24. Negreiros (Jose da Costa: Portuguese, mid-18th century) Black chalk profile of a boy facing left. 8 1/2 X 7 5/8 inches, 218 X 193 mm. £12
25. Palma Giovane (1544-1628) Pen & ink with touches of pale bistre: Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine: the Virgin on left, the Child on her left knee (in centre of drawing): the saint kneels on the right, two small angels are at her sides: two angels in the sky hold the wheel on which she was martyred: on verso, in a very early hand, "Palma", in ink. Watermarks include initials CC with trefoil between the letters. 11 5/8 X 7 3/4 inches, 294 X 197 mm. Tietze ("Drawings of the Venetian Painters") mentions several Palma compositions of this subject including 838 & 839 in Brno: also 1037 (1) 71, in Munich. £150
26. Parmigianino follower. Bistre wash over black chalk, chiaroscuro effect. Virgin & Child & the infant Saint John. 6 3/4 X 8 1/4 inches, 170 X 210 mm. Watermark has some resemblance to Churchill's 560 (Genoese 1739). An 18th century drawing of great beauty. £40
27. Pasinelli (Lorenzo, of Bologna, 1629-1700) Pen & ink, a fine free sketch for a penitent Magdalen, her right hand on the skull, the gaze directed upwards: on verso: Cupid asleep, his hand on an arrow. 7 7/8 X 6 5/8 inches, 199 X 167 mm. Faint traces of red-chalk squaring on the attractive main drawing. £35
28. Passarotti (Bartolommeo, 1529-1592) Thick pen & brown ink. Head & shoulders of a fantastic monster (& part of another head behind). 16 1/4 X 11 inches, 410 X 280 mm. Laid down at an early impressive size. Inscribed with very early attribution Passerotti: at top right corner, the early number, in ink, 129, & an X at lower right corner. See illustration. £250
29. Passarotti (B., 1529-1592) Pen & brown ink, large "heroic" heads of man & woman, profile to left. 13 7/8 X 10 7/8 inches, 350 X 275 mm.: three corners missing, but this does not affect the drawing, which is slightly, not badly, rubbed. £90

31. (After Sebastiano del Piombo) a 17th-18th century pen & ink study of (nude) Christ, of the Flagellation, the left leg & lower arms unfinished. See Berenson "I disegni dei pittori fiorentini" (1961), volume 3, plate 695 (& item 2488 on page 546 of volume 2 of text). 32. Russo (Nicola, of Naples, c. 1647-1702) Pen & ink & bistre. Signed. Design for the elaborate rectangular corner of a domed ceiling. A pupil of Luca Giordano, he painted the chapel royal of Naples. Square, 7 inches, 175 mm. From the Auldjo collection (Lugt 48). £58
33. (Portrait) of Charles Quint (1500-1558) attributed to Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661). Red chalk, standing, full-length, in armour, helmet on table on right of drawing, left hand rests lightly on sword hilt. On verso, half a dozen small red chalk faint female nude studies. 13 1/8 X 8 7/8 inches, 335 X 225 mm. £14

36. Zuccaro (Taddeo, 1529-1566) Pen & ink & bistre: square 7 7/8 inches, 199 mm. Solomon receives the Queen of Sheba: has framing-lines & at base the original ink inscription "Videns Regina Saba omnem sapientiam Salomonis...". £125
37. Bologna c. 1550. A powerful ink & thick pen drawing, The Presentation of the Virgin, squared for transfer in black chalk (with colour-notes by initials & numbers). 12 X 9 5/8 inches, 303 X 245 mm. A loss of paper affecting the shoulders of a man on the extreme right, has been skillfully repaired. £200
38. Italian c. 1570, a detailed design for an elaborate Ciborium in pen & brown ink & washes of green, pink, red, brown & yellow. 20 1/2 X 16 1/4 inches, 520 X 413 mm. A beautiful & most impressive drawing. See illustration. £300
