128. Sandoz-Rollin (Baron David Alphonse de, Swiss, 1740-1809) Watercolor, a lovely girl (not in mourning) kneels with clasped hands beside a willow & a pedstal dated 13 avril 1783. 9 1/8x 7 inches, 232x175 mm. On verso, a small pencil-study of a seated girl. £14

133. (?French 18th century) Black chalk rapid sketch of a clown, facing: the head, touched with red chalk, shows a great deal of character. 7 3/4x3 3/4 inches, 195x96 mm. £8

134. French 18th century head of a young girl, profile to left, the hair loosely gathered at top of head & with tendrils of hair at back of neck. 11 3/4x8 3/4 inches, 300x220 mm., including a pentimento at base where the artist added the collar of her dress. Black chalk on white paper. £25

135. French 19th century watercolour, wall decoration, reminiscent of but plainer than Savonnerie tapestries, the centre is a group of flowers. 12x7 3/4 inches, 303x198 mm. £75

141. Blaas (Eugene de: Austrian: born 1843, died after 1891) Oil-sketch on canvas, brown & white (not on stretcher). Facinf portrait of a young lady. 16 1/2x11 1/4 inches, 422x290 mm. (From chin to top of hair 11 inches.) His portraits are uncommon. £18

142. Circle of Willem Buytewech (1591-1624) Bistre on brown background: elegant ladies & gentlemen at a banquet. 6 3/4x9 7/8 inches, 173x251 mm. The left corners restored. £12

143. Dunker (Balthasar Anton: Stralsund 1746-Berne 1801) Brown wash with the brush, a waterfall, bushes on overhanging rocks, with figures in the foreground. 7 1/4x5 1/4 inches, 185x132 mm. £8

144. Ehret (Georg Dyonis: Erfurt 1710-Chelsea 1770) Three separate watercolours of grasshoppers (said to have been drawn at Badminton): average width 2 3/4 inches, 70 mm. The 3, as a group only. £36

145. Flamen (Albert, Flemish c. 1620-c. 1670) Pen & brown ink & gray wash. Cavalry charging through a village where a house is fiercely on fire: in foreground & on house on left are numerous birds. 3 3/4x6 1/4 inches, 94x160mm. £90

146. Glauber (Johannes, 1646-1726) Black chalk touched with white, on blue paper, trees & figures near a pool in a landscape. 9 5/8x12 3/4 inches, 245x325 mm. There is a rather similar landscape plate 429 of W. Bernt's "The netherlandish painters of the 17th century", Phaidon Press, London 1970 (in the first of the three volumes). £40

147. Hecht (Joseph: Polish, born at Lodz 1981) Signed pencil study of a seated boy. 15 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches, 397 x 297 mm. Hecht worked mostly in Paris. £48

148. Hendschel (Albert, of Frankfurt, 1834-1883) Watercolour, slightly faded, Snow-White in her glass coffin, watched by a dwarf, some hares & numerous birds. Signed with monogram. 4 5/8 x 5 1/4 inches, 118 x 138 mm. Hendschel made illustrations for many books, chiefly German legends & fairy-stories. £21

149. Klotz (Valentin, of Maastricht, working between 1667 & 1697) Pen & ink & gray wash. Inscribed & dated "de 7/3 1672 de Goudtsche Zluys" in typical hand of artist. 3 5/8 x 5 7/8 inches, 92x 149mm. £45

150. Qullinus (Jan Erasmus, called Seder & Cederbroom: Antwerp 1634-Malines 1715) Pen & brown wash, heightened with much white. "Pentecost", with numerous figures. 7 3/4 x 9 1/8 inches, 196 x 232 mm. Inscribed (?signed). It is thought that "Vossius" may have collaborated on this drawing. £85

151. Scheidl (Franz Anton von, of Vienna 1731-1801) Watercolour of two dogs standing in profile on grass (no background). Inscribed "Canis Aegyptius, Turkische Hunde" (they look rather like lurchers). The drawn surface 6 x 14 1/2 inches, on paper measuring 13 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches, 350 x 500 mm. In splendidly fresh state. £60

153. Spitzweg (Karl: Munich 1808-1885) Two pencil drawings, each with the artist's mark & facsimile of signature (Lugt, 2307): 
(1)A venerable old Turk followed by two servants, 7 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches, 185 x 157 mm. £50

154. Circle of B. Spranger (1546-1611) Black chalk: Christ & Mary Magdalene ("noli me tangere") 1/2 length figures. 11 7/8 x 8 1/4 inches, 302 x 212 mm.: watermark = 8-pointed star with (?a flower) in central circle above monogram G.P. The subject was engraved by Aegidius Sadeler (1570-1629): a painting was in Prague in 1621 (see Jahrbuch ... Sammlungen XXV, 1905, part two, XLI, number 991). Photos of engraving & two related paintings, are offered with the drawing. £130

155. Wetterling (Alexander Clemens, Swedish, born Uppland 1796, died Stockholm 1858). Pen & ink & brown wash. Signed, inscribed & dated, Rom 1830. In a large stable a dragoon is looking after a horse< there are others horses & grooms: in the background one sees a classical statue in a niche below a vine on a terrace with large flower-pots. 9 1/8 x 12 3/8 inches, 233 x 320mm. £42

156. Jacob de Wit's circle (first half of 18th century) Pen & ink & watercolour, a project for an elaborate large ceiling with mythological figures including Mercury, Juno, Phaethon, Hercules, Pegasus, the muses, etc. 6 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches, 159 x 469 mm. Fine decorative work, recalling the grandeurs of Thornhill. From the collection of Sir Bruce Ingram, with his mark on verso (Lugt, Suppl., 1405a). £135

157. P. de Witte ("Candido", Flemish 1548-1628) Pen & brown ink heightened with white, on gray paper. A young bearded king holding orb & scepter seated on a carved throne with canopy. 11 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches, 290 x 183 mm. £130

158. Schloss Dornburg. Watercolour & gouache, signed by Ernst Oehme (1797-1855), a pupil of C. D. Friedrich of the Dresden Academy: he became court-painter at Dresden & an honorary member of the D. Academy. A fine general view of the castle on the hill, with village at the foot, river, with cattle, fisherman & other figures. 11 x 19 1/4 inches, 280 x 492mm., plus wide plain margins. Dornburg is on the river Salle, 10 miles from Jena (between Erfurt & Leipzig). £32

159. "Prague in 1825 (from the Hetz Island)". Pencil. Inscribed & dated (on verso ?Petersholdt, ?a Scandinavian artist). 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches, 98 x 130mm. £8

160. (Suvorov, Russian field-marshal, Count Alexander Vasilievich S., 1729-1800) A highly-finished oval gouache portrait. 11 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches, 283 x 226 mm. He wears several elaborate orders on his green coat with red collar. A fine decorative half-length portrait of this cruel & successful soldier (who is mentioned in several cantos of Byron's Don  Juan). £100

161. German (dated Jan. 1616, inscribed Passau, monogram WR or WA) Pen & ink & gray wash. St. Catherine appears in a vision: a Christian officer wielding large sword, causes Turkish cavalry & infantry to flee: castle on tall cliff in background. 7 1/4 x 6 inches, 182 x 151 mm., corners cut. 162. Flemish, dated 1641, red chalk study of the head of a youthful Bacchus or Silenus, from the antique, by a close follower of Rubens. Full-face, 5  1/2 x 4 7/8 inches, 138 x 123mm. The four blank corners made up. £80

163. Flemish early 17th century, pen & ink & gray wash, a woman holding Hercules' club & the skin of a lion, inscribed at top left "Nobilitas". Name of Spranger in lower left corner, but the drawing has apparently no connection with him. 7 3/4 x 5 inches, 197 x 127 mm £ 25

164. Flemish 17th century, pen & ink & wash, a monk holding a lighted taper, half length, above a blank scroll with cherubs' heads. 3 5/8 x 2 1/2 inches. £24

165. Dutch mid 17th century. Gray wash on blue paper, trees in a forest, with a winding path. 14 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches, 375 x 246 mm. (Though close to A. Waterloo, this fine drawing may be by Willem or his less-known brother Daniel Schellinks, compare plate 127, No. 143, of the 1968-9 exhibition "Les paysagistes hollandais" Institut Neerlandais, Paris.)
