  157. English late 18th century, black chalk, bust-lenth £6 portrait of a girl wearing a be-ribboned straw hat with narrow brim. 9 1/4 x 7 3/8 inches, 235 x 188 mm., possibly by George Dance. 3 tears have been repaired.
  158. "At Capel Curig 1837". Black chalk touched with £13 white on gray paper, studies of horses, pack-donkeys, barrows, a basket, broom etc. 14 x 10 3/8 inches, 354 x 265 mm. 
  159. Cader Idris, colourwash on blue-gray paper, dated £5 15 Sept. (no year), c. 1840. 7 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches. 
  160. English, early 19th century, brown ink & wash, studies £14 of men, women & children listening to a preacher: has been attributed at one time to Sir D. Wilkie (1785-1841) & this does not seem unreasonable. 9 3/4 x 15 1/4 inches, 249 x 388 mm. 
  161. (Devon) Pen & ink landscape, inscribed on verso £5 "A view of the cliff at Head Ware, Exeter, Sept. 15, 1803". 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches, 170 x 258 mm. 
  162. (South Devon) Watercolours, signed by "H.H" & each with a date between 1807 & 1809. Average size 9 x 13 inches; inscribed on border:
   1) Rocks near Dawlish. £10

  163. "Muswell Hill & Southwood Common" watercolour £10 signed by H.H., dated 1809. 9 x 14 1/2 inches. 
  164. "Cranford Bridge" over small river amid trees, an £8 elegant little one-arch bridge. Signed by H.H., dated 1807. 9 1/4 x 14 inches. 

  165. Oil on millboard, English c. 1840. Nobleman with £12 white feather in red cap, fur collar over dark-blue velvet & his young wife in yellow skirt, blue bodice trimmed with gold, white sleeves, & their small child, on terrace of a castle. 15 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches. 
  166. English, early 19th century, pen & ink & watercolour, £12 an Italian girl on the vine-bordered wall of a terrace, sits & rests one hand on a large jar. 6 5/8 x 4 3/4 inches, 167 x 120 mm. 
  167. "Bartlow Tumuli" (10 miles south-east of Cambridge). £8 Watercolour heightened with white, on gray-green paper. Dated Feb. 1841. 8 1/2 x 12 5/8 inches, 215 x 321 mm., the cornders cut, not affecting the drawing: numbered 2151 in lower left. 
  169. English c. 1830, pen & ink & brown wash, a view in Rome £6 (? aqueduct of Domitian), 7 1/4 x 5 7/8 inches, 185 x 148 mm. 
  170. English, mid-19th century, brown & blue wash, heightened £12 with white, a continental lake-scene with covered boat in foreground & a boat at a landing-stage. 7 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches; had been attributed to Brabazon: though quite unlike his late work, this could possibly be an early drawing of his. 
  171. "Lily Langtry" (The Jersey Lily, 1852-1929) Water- £20 colour * bodycolour, on brown paper, a caricature signed by "Nap". A large profile "straight" head of the famous beauty, with a racehorse's body, inscribed by the artist "Jersey Lily, bay mare, 5 yrs., by the Imperial-Beauty". 10 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches, 275 x 316 mm. 
  172. English circa 1860. Watercolour miniature head of a £10 young lady, full-face, hair parted in middle, wearing a close bonnet, circular, diameter 3 1/8 inches, 80 mm. 
  173. Stokesay Castle (Shropshire) dated 13 Sept. 1870. £7 Watercolour 7 x 10 inches, 179 x 255 mm. (13th century fortified manor-house with Elizabethan gatehouse).

  174. Zucchi (Francesco, 1692-1764): pen & ink & wash drawings for the 2nd edition of Salmon's Lo Stato Presente, published c. 1740-1760 by G.B. Albrizzi, Venice: the drawings were transferred into prints the same way round, by the special process described by Didérot (Encl: Paris 1757, Vol. VII, pge 880). Each drawing has a most elegant gray wash border of the period around it, the measurements do not include the border:
   1) Altar of the Cappella della SS. Sindone 
      (=Sudario, Holy Shroud in which Our Lord's body 
      was wrapped), in Turin. 6 3/8 x 4 1/8 inches, 162

   2) Gateway in Turin dedicated to Charles Emanuel 
      Duke of Savoy (1562-1630) ("Porta Nuova

      155 x 102 mm., (slight stain at top by the

   4) Monument to the poet Jacopo Sannazaro (1458-1530) 
      in Chiesa del Sannazaro (Sta. Maria del Parto), 
      Naples. It was designed by Girolamo Santa Croce & 
      Fra Giovanni da Montorsoli from a design by the 
      poet himself; 6 1/4 x 4 inches, 157 x 100 mm.

   5) Tomb of Robert d'Anjou king of Naples (died 
      1343), 6 1/4 x 4 inches, 160 x 102 mm.   £18
   6) King Alfonso Gateway (centre of castle entrance), 
      Castel Nuovo, Naples. Erected to commemorate the 
      entry of Alfonso fo Aragon, 2 June 1442: the 
      statues are of Saints Michael, Anthony Abbot & 
      Sebastian as well as the Four Cardinal Virtues. 6

   7) Monument to King Philip V in Sicily. He stands on 
      an orb supported by Lions which hold crowns &

   8) Statue in Palermo to Philip IV (near the Palazzo 
      Reale); seven steps lead up to it: he was wearing 
      crown, holds sceptre, on the surrounding 
      balustrade are allegorical figures. 6 1/4 x 4

      cathedral is a side elevation, the other five are

  175. Zucchi (Francesco, 1692-1764) Pen & ink & gray wash, £45 an architectural fantasy after a drawing by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena which was used as a study for the engraving by J. A. Pfeffel in "Architecture e prospective dedic... Carlo Sesto...," 1740, No. 10, P. III. 5 5/8 x 9 5/8 inches, 144 x 245 mm., excluding the original handsome gray-wash borders.
  176. Italian 17th century, pen & ink & dark bistre heightened £48 with much white: The Holy Family to whom an angel offers a bowl of fruit, two cherubs are in the sky. 6 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches, 160 x 197 mm. 
  177. Italian 17th century (by the same hand as above). £48 Pen & ink & dark bistre heightened with much white. The Holy Family, with small angels. 6 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches, 174 x 140 mm. 
  178. Italian 17th century black chalk, Virgin & Saint Anne £50 seated, in large draperies, the Holy Child is held with infinite gentleness between them; 12 1/2 x 16 inches, 320 x 410 mm. A vertical tear has been neatly repaired (no loss of paper); four corners restored (not affecting the figures). From collection of the Round family of Birch Hall, Colchester. 
  179. Italian 17th century red-chalk larger-than-life head of a £52 Roman emperor, from a statue. 15 1/4 x 10 1/8 inches, 388 x 258 mm. 
  180. Labruzzi. Think pen & ink, Hercules, seated, with his £15 club, either by Carlo (1748-1817) or his elder brother Tommaso (1739-1805). 10 1/2 x 7 5/8 inches, 268 x 195 mm. 
  181. French circa 1590. Red & black chalk 3/4- face portrait £40 of the wife of the historian J. A. de Thou (1553-1617), they were married n 1587. Watermark, a bunch of grapes. 10 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 259 x 235 mm., the base rounded.
  182. French early 17th century, red, black & yellow, chalk, £20 facing head & shoulders of a plump-cheeked girl. 15 3/4 x 11 inches, 405 x 280 mm. 
  183. (Dwarf) Pencil, circa 1830, the mount inscribed "Nain £12 de Mr. Demidoff à Florence". Full-length standing in profile, hands in pockets. 7 1/2 x 5 inches, 188 x 127 mm. A very fine drawing of an unusual subject for by 1830 it was rather out of fashion to keep one's own dwarf. The Demidoffs were immensely rich Russians, who lived in that country & in Florence & the Crimea: many French artists worked for the Florence branch of the family. 
  184. Adam (Victor, 1801-1866) Pencil, irregularly cut oval £8 3 7/8 x 3 1/2 inches, 100 x 88 mm. Rider (17th century) on horseback. Signed with initals.
  185. Nice (Alpes Martimes) A group of three brown wash £25 drawings circa 1820, about 10 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches, 263 x 414 mm. One from the sea, castle in centre with Montalban & Montboron on right. Another from the west, the castle in centre & Cap Ferrat in distance. The last from inland seen from the slopes of Montalban with Montboron on extreme left, with the coast towards east in the right background. The three, not separated.
