234. (Habsburg) A large & charming watercolor of Archduchess Valerie, youngest daughter of Franz Josef of Austria & of the loverly Empress Elizabeth. The little girl is about 3 years old, is standing alone beside a large dog in a room, with panelled wall heightened with gold. Valerie is in her white party-dress of muslin with panels of embroidery & lace: pink sash: low-cut neck: a coral necklace: short cape selves. She holds a little pink rose: she wears dainty brown shoes & white socks: her short hair is pale auburn. A doll & a few flowers are scattered on the floor, lilac & daises are on a large gilt stool beside her. She is quite enchanting. The watercolour was made by Michael Stohl (Vienna 1813-1881) after the large original by the portraitist Franz Schrotzberg, also of Vienna, (1811-1889) in 1870, & my watercolour was presented (with a silver tea-set which I do not have) to Miss Drew who had been Valerie's governess. Miss Drew came from County Meath (the Empress loved hunting in Ireland, with handsome Bay Middleton riding near her). The watercolour was later left to Mrs. A. McCarthy. It measures 21 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches, 545 x 387 mm. It is surrounded by a brass border, inset with velvet, built into the original brown morocco folder with flap. Overall measurements 25 x 19 inches, weights 10 pounds. There is no glass. The portfolio is slightly worn, the watercolour is in the finest state. Valerie had occupied a very special place in the Empress' life who wrote to her some astonishing letters. Compare the strangest & most oppressive of letters from mother to Valerie ("It is you alone that I love . . .": see "Diary of Archduchess V., 9 December 1887 & E.C. Corti's 'Elizabeth, Empress of Austria". £130
