E. H. Wheelock, Esq.
            Sir:
I have the honor to inform you that I have made every effort in my power, to start a colored school at Clinton. The white population being opposed to such an enterprise, I could obtain no house or room for school purposes. My efforts, to raise money among the freed people, for the purpose of building a Meeting-and school-house, have also failed. a great many have signed at several meetings I have held, but it is impossible to collect one cent of money- at least at present. I have no doubt that same thing can be done after the crops have been gathered; but IO shall be obligated to drop the subject for the present time, under the government advance some money. Please inform me if it would do any good, to make an application to that effect.
                                                    Very Respectfully,
                                                    Albert A. Hetzner
                                          Lieut. And Sub Asst. Comm'r.
