Dear Sir
I arrived here a few days ago. I found a small school [[strikethrough]]on[[strikethrough]] but the gentleman teaching did not intend to continue, and he was glad to see some one come to establish a permanent school.
I now write to enquire if the introduction of the Phonetic System of teaching spelling and reading, would meet with your approval, or be in accordance with the regulations of the Schools for Freedmen. I am practically acquainted with that System, and presume you understand its philosophy and great merits. I write Pitmans Phonography, though not so fast now, as I did when I made reporting my special business. I think there is a fair prospect for a school at this place, though, as yet, I can not speak decisively. If I remain here, and the school goes on satisfactorily, it is my intention to teach the smartest of the scholars how to set type, with a view to the publication of a newspaper at some future day.
Phonetic Books can, I presume, be obtained from
