My dear Chancellor Sheil,

We very sorry that it was impossible for us to see you in Chicago, but you will find in these lines the purpose of our visit to see His Eminence, and we should like you to kindly bring this matter before him.

Before we left Paris, Cardinal Dubois gave us a letter of introduction to both Cardinal Hayes and Cardinal Mundelein. The Sacre Coeur of Paris which was started during the last years of the 19th century has not been completed. To finish the outside appearance of this magnificient church which overlooks Paris, two statues are required. They are to be in bronse about fifteen feet high, and represent -- St. Joan of Arc, and St. Louis. The Sacre Coeur is supporting quite a number of charities. One of the biggest ones is the Cancer Hospital which is supported by general subscription from almost everyone in Paris. On account of the of the depreciation of the franc and the terrific taxation, such people as Marquise de Ganay are not able to do anything further for them, and then again, prices have gone up tremendously. One of the greatest supporters of that charity was the Baroness Henri de Rothschild who just died. The written figures which were given to us by His Eminence's secretary M. Dutey Harispe were so small, that we thought we could help him in some way.

We had the great privilege to be received by His Eminence Cardinal Hayes, and a committee is now being formed which is going to be submitted to him this coming Wednesday by Mrs. Tiers. We referred our plan to Cardinal Hayes who who fully approves of it. There are two things we want to do. One is to hold an exhibition of religious art objects of the Mediaeval Age. In those days, you know, that Catholicism was the national religion of France and we are indebited to the Catholic Church for all our beautiful cathedrals, churchs, art objects, schools, etc. This exhibition would have an international character, because we would have art objects from
