TO THE DEALERS IN THE FINE ARTS:-

The art dealers of the country after January 1st must operate under the Retail Trades Code unless a special code for our own trade is substituted and approved. Under the retail code we must operate with certain restrictions difficult to comply with, particularly as to reemployment or hours of labor. Furthermore, while we are subject to the administration of the code, we shall have no representative on its Council.

By advice of the code authority, this Association is now working toward a special code for a Retail Fine Arts Division of the Retail Trades, under which we may secure more liberal treatment as to hours, incorporate additional provisions as to Trade Practices, and insure representation on the Council of Administration. Enclosed is a report of the first meeting between our Code Committee and the Administrator's Office in Washington.

As to Paragraph (A), all dealers are eligible who sell at retail, as an important part of their operations, original paintings and water colors; signed proofs of etchings, engravings, woodcuts and lithographs, or fine prints over fifty years old; and limited editions or rare pieces of sculpture.

If your business places you within this classification, we ask your cooperation to the extent of becoming an Associate Member of this Association (probably on a basis of $10. per annum to defray the cost of administrating the Code), so that the Code we submit may be truly representative of the trade, as specified on page 1 of the Report. Please read carefully this page as well as sections (G) and (H). We ask, too, your consideration of paragraph (F) and invite your comments on the provisions of its numbered paragraphs.

So that we may present the best possible case in applying to the Code Authority for suitable hours, etc., will you please fill in the enclosed blank as carefully as possible, and return it promptly?
