SUB-ASSISTANT COMISSIONER'S (OR AGENTS) MONTHLY REPORT
on Education of Freedman and Refugees in Sub-District, State of Texas in charge of James P Butler for the Month of April 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5, Bureau R., F., & A.L.]

1. Name of your Sub-District? No. 19 comprising the counties of Walker, Madison & a portion of Polk
2. Whole number of Refugee or Freedmen's Schools in the District? Day? 1. Night? 0. Sabbath? 0.
3. Location of Schools? Huntsville, Walker Co Texas
4. Whole number of Teachers? White? 1. Colored? 0.
5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Mrs M.E. Butler Huntsville, Walker Co Texas
6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 1. Their condition, capacity, value, and by whom owned? Condition: Good. Capacity: will seat about 500 children, value: Two thousand dollars, owned by the freed people.
7. Number of your visits to Schools? Day? 2 Night 0 Sabbath 0 per month
8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? one. Where? Huntsville.
9. Number and names of places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Three: Waverly: Walker Co, Grants Colony: Walker Co. and Cold Springs: Polk Co
10. Number of pupils (estimated) who would attend such Schools? one hundred and fifty
11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? Comparatively nothing could be raised, until after this years crop is gathered.
12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of  schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or the State government? At present I am making no efforts as the school that is in operation at present will close on the 9th of May and then I wish to make some arrangements for a Master
13. Whole number of additional School-houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District? Three
14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? I could if I had the assistance from the Bureau in the way of paid teachers.
15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? Only two or three good teachers paid by the Bureau or some society
16. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedmen and Poor Whites? There is no sentiment at all. The people are not averse to their education but they want it done by some other person besides them
17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? In what ways could they be carried on? They are not much needed at present but will be in the fall and winter
18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? It can do nothing more than furnish the teachers and assist in paying them
19. How long will Northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? all of this year and next.
