Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? ___ Where? 9. Number and names of places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Owing to Mrs. M. A. Henderson having left here last week the town of Wharton is now destitute of a Colored School A school on 10. Number of pupils (estimated) who would attend such Schools? Canes Matagorda Centr would be desirable It is very difficult to estimate the number of pupils who would attend such schools from the fact that most of the freed people in my sub district are without the means of paying for the tuition of their children. But I should imagine that some fifty scholars or so might be obtained. 11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? For the same reason I much doubt whether a sum worth to be mentioned could be raised by the freedmen for school purposes in each destitute neighborhood,owing to their inability or zeal to sustain it the school 12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents boards of education, or the State government? taught by Mrs. Henderson broke up and there is no reason for supposing that in the above mentioned neighborhood the freed people have more means, more ability or zeal to sustain a school than 13. Whole number of additional School-houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District? the colored inhabitants of Wharton and its environs have all that can be done to urge upon the colored people the advantages which will 14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? accrue to them from education and by sustaining their schools I do. But owing to their impoverished 15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? means argument and advice is of little good if not indeed superfluous as they appear not so much to lack the zeal and will to support and 16. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedmen and Poor Whites? organize schools as the power and necessary means to carry them on. The white people in my sub district are extremely indifferent to the question of education and in regard to the education of the freedmen their indifference extends in many cases to opposition actuated by no real desire for the benefit and elevation of the freedman they are but little anxious to see him educated and whatever their theories and expressions affirm in this 17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? In what way could they be carried on? respect their actions and practice most clearly deny, From them, at least for many years no great encourage-ment is to be expected. The Bureau together with northern charitable aid has done much for the education of the freed people and their efforts have been productive of much 18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of refugees (or Poor Whites)? good, yet I am of opinion that the requirements of the case will never be fully reached nor the benefit and elevating effects of education be generally diffused among the freedmen until a regular 19. How long will Northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? system of free schools shall be established for their behalf.
