on Education of Freedman and Refugees in Sub-District, State of Texas in charge of T.M.K. Smith Capt. 26 Inf.
for the Month of April 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5 Bureau R., F., & A.L.]

2. Whole number of Refugee or Freedmen's Schools in the District? 5 Day? 5 Night?  Sabbath? 10

3. Location of Schools? Marshall, Harrison Co. Jefferson Manin Co

4. Whole number of Teachers? 5 White? 2 Colored? 3

5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Mepen Clauson Poier[[?]] Price Jefferson Texas McMassey Caroline Poe Coleman Clark Marshall Harrison Co

6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 3 Their condition, capacity, value, and by whom owned? Condition poor. Capacity about 250 pupils Value $700 each. J. Lang Thomas Ward Caroline Poe

7. Number of your visits to Schools?   Day?   Night?   Sabbath? I visit the schools once a week.

8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? None Where?

9. Number of names and places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Henderson Rundole Carthage Panola Co Gilmer, Upshur Co

10. Number of pupils (estimated) who would attend such Schools? Four hundred

11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? The freedpeople are unable to raise any school fund in this Sub-District owing to the short crop last year

12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or the State government?

13. Whole number of additional School-houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District? Four

14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? no

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? In order to secure competant teachers help to the amount of $200 would be needed. 

16. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedmen and Poor Whites? The mass of the whites are willing for the education of the freedmen but are unwilling to render any assistance. The poor whites will not attend Schools under charge of the Bureau

17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? Yes In what way could they be carried on? By employing Salaried Teachers

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? "Poor Whites" would consider any assistance coming from the "Bureau" an insult

19. How long will Northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? As we have never had any charitable aid I am unable to answer
