8. Remarks. The school has made good progress during the past month. The short nights have caused a decrease in the number of scholars.

I beg leave so suggest the necessity which exists for those who are loyal to the government; of encouraging the freedmen in the work of education, as in my humble opinion, it is the only means by which loyal men can sustain themselves in the South.
The education of the Freedmen is a work of humanity, and the only safeguard of their Liberties.
