Mother of D. H. B.
89TH JUBILEE.
Mrs. Lucy Holmes was feted last Friday and Saturday at her home, 290 Walnut street, Stoughton, in honor of her 89th birthday anniversary. Mrs. Blanche Barry, her faithful companion, served a chicken dinner in southern style to 10 friends. A large wedding cake, appropriately inscribed, was centered on the dinner table and place cards were found at each plate.
Mrs. Holmes was very happy on this occasion, when she received several gifts of flowers, potted plants, scarfs, candy, and a large shower of birthday cards. On Saturday other friends and neighbors called to greet her.
She enjoys excellent health and continues to do things about the house which have always been her custom. She retires early, but always arises early. She enjoys reading the Daily Enterprise, keeping in touch with the events of the world.
She was born in Stoughton in what is known as "The Mary Baker Eddy" house on Central street and was a favorite of Mary Baker Eddy as a girl. She was the daughter of Alanson and Sally (Talbot) Wentworth. She graduated from the Stoughton High school in the class with the late Dr. W. O. Faxon in 1867. Many years ago she took work to do at home from the woolen mills and hat factories, and all through life has made herself a useful citizen, and was a faithful helpmate to her husband, the late Arthur L. Holmes. She has one daughter, Doris, wife of Dr. Sidney Blake, in Washington, and a grand-daughter. In Mrs. Barry, she feels as though she had a loyal companion, and she feels she owes a deep sense of gratitude to her for her faithfulness to her the past 10 years since the death of her husband.
