Camp at 8 a.m. and started off to the north skirting the timber-line in order to reach the east side of the peak. My men did not know this route and persisted in taking every trail that led down the slope so that I had great difficulty in getting them along as they showed an absurd timidity about going to a part of the mountain where they were unacquainted. Finally we reached the border of a deep caƱon which descends the East slope of peak from above the snow down to about 10000 ft. This was the point I had aimed to reach & down along the southern side
