is always kept in the corner for that purpose.  The floor is of earth with an open fire with 3 or 4 stones at the side of fireplace for supporting kettles &c. in cooking.  No smokehole is left in the roof.  The family usually sleep on rush mats spread on the ground although some of the more advanced have a rude plank bench to lie upon.  The seats are small blocks of wood & the household utilities are of the most limited kind. 

These people are citizens of Mexico with all rights of franchise, &c. possessed by the most educated in the land.
