left.  Most of the course lay across llanos with scattered areas of brush & low woods evidently belonging to the arid tropical belt.  When the plains became low so that water [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] is near the surface great numbers of palms 30-40 ft high were abundent & often form considerable forests.  With them are many species of deciduous trees & shrubs which form low matted thickets or woods.

Alvarado is a small town on the shore & reaching back among the sand dunes that cover the point of land lying at the mouth of the bay between the latter & the sea shore (on the north side of the bay).  It has a good depth of water in the bay & thence up to the town of Flacotalpam so that steamers of 4000 tons enter & ascend to load with wood, hides &c at the latter place.
