[[strikethrough]] which is. [[/strikethrough]]  at 2 P.M. we left Alvarado in a small stern wheeled steamer & proceeded up the Cosamaloapan R. [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] some 35 miles to Flacotalpam.

This is a beautiful little town of one story, white-washed houses strung along the bank of the river Cosamaloapan opposite the mouth of the Rio San Juan.  The river front has several small wharves with custom house sheds backed by a green grassy slope with a row of pleasant looking white-washed fronting the water.  Back of this lies the rest of the town with very irregular, curving & mismatched streets in picturesque confusion.  Several very pretty little parks or plazas are scattered about and the streets are all grown over with a short thick sod of green grass which is kept quite clean & we have in consequence the unusual
