sight of a really clean mexican town. One great cause of the cleanliness of the town lies in the fact that the traffic here is almost wholly by water so that but very few animals are to be seen in the streets. The houses are nearly all one story with flat roofs & with a portico in front of each one faced with round, square or fluted pillars so that the vistas down the streets show long vanishing series of pillars giving the place a peculiar & striking appearance. The houses are all neatly painted & white washed with tile floors to portico & interior & the people seem to have a pride keeping the premises neat.

The principal square is a beautiful little garden with a number of noble palms & a considerable variety of flowering shrubs. T he palace is the headquarters of several enterprising firms, mainly the Chazero, Hijos & Co & Chazero [[?Sucero]] who own the small steamers plying to Alvarado & up the Cosamoloapam & San Juan Rivers.
