Mr. James Parmelee,
The Causeway,
Klingle Rd.
Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Parmelee:

We wish to call your attention to an extremely interesting picture which we have recently acquired. It is an authenticated, full length portrait of George Washington, by Charles Wilson Peale; the canvas measuring 44" x 61".

In the background are two small figures on horseback, of General Lafayette and Colonel Tilghman, Washington's Aides-de-Camp, and there is also a distant view of Hassau Hall, Princeton College, with a small group of Ressian prisoners under guard.

The provenance of this picture is also very interesting, as it belonged to Mlle. de la Fresnaye, aunt of Pierre de Nolhao, who was formerly the Curator at Versailles, and who is now in charge of the Jacquemart André Museum in Paris.

This portrait was brought to France during the reign of Louis XVI, by a friend of Rochambeau, and was reframed in Paris; this frame, under the old guilding, is still on the picture.

It was borrowed by the French Government and lent to the St. Louis Exposition in 1904, where it was shown in the place of honor, in the main hall of the French section of the exhibition. It is in excellent condition and very brilliant in color.

If you feel that you would be at all interested in it, we would be pleased to let you have further particulars.

Awaiting the favor of our reply,
Believe us to be,
Yours very truly,
JACQUES SELIGMANN & CO., INC/
