Stoughton January 23rd 1946 

Dear Doris 

It is very sunny but zero early this morning it warmed up but now is around 20 degrees outside + growing warmer as the day advances. terribly slippery going but this sun may thaw the icy going. people are warned to stay in the house for fear of accidents. if we live through this weather, we shall live forever. I sweep off the steps + leave the rest to the sun. a truck load of sand has just come up + they are putting it on the highways. did you notice the sky last night at sunset? it was very red + beautiful. 

Was your cat in any way disfugured when he was stepped on as the [[underlined]] devil [[/underlined]] decended on him on the cellar stairs? poor old animal, he is much to be pitied. We are lucky to have something to eat these days, baked beans was our dinnner + Oysters yesterday. our chicken is still with us + may last the rest of the week, if we go slow + stretch it along. 

I am glad you are good to write to Maude I am sure she is much better + may get over this one + live to have another one that may take her. Bertha has proved to be her dearest friend + stood by her through all her troubles what would
