a sign is painted conspicuously on the wall saying that no masons or protestants are admitted.
This town is on the bank of a small stream in a narrow valley between steep hills. Its alt. is 4200 ft. like that of Ameca & the hills round about are covered with the same arid land growth of brush with a few long leaved pines.
Mch. 5th feeling thoroughly used up by yesterday's trip I decided to remain here & rest up today as to be able to go on tomorrow. Goldman went out for birds with poor luck. The church windows fronting the plaza have been partly covered by nests of the cliff swallows whose rounded nests still cluster thickly along the cornices. The birds are a happy chattering lot now very busy about house-keeping affairs. At vespers just before dark a lot of the birds came in in a flock & dashing down in a bunch with eager twitterings they darted into the nests as though playing some game to be lost by the hindmost. When all were in soft twitterings could be heard as the pairs snuggled down for the night & then silence fell with the darkness.
