A ranch near Victoria made an experimental planting of 6 acres of tomatoes last winter & sold $1500. worth from the vines, shipping to the U.S. in winter. Near Tampico a crop on 80 acres (of winter tomatoes) is said to have brought $12000 & last winter 130 acres yielded $20000. This region undoubtedly offers great inducements to settlers & the climate does not appear to be especially bad.

The towns of Tula & Jaumave S.W. of Victoria are said to be the centre of an ixtle producing region the product being sent out by way of Victoria.

Many Spaniards come to Mexico in search of a fortune & it is very common for them to marry Mexican women with money. When two Spaniards meet who have not seen one another for a long time & one of them has been married meanwhile his friend does not inquire about his wife but asks "how much did you marry?" The only interest centering in the financial part of the affair.

Tampico like Monterey is full of Americans & many of the natives speak English. From the hotel in the evening we can hear the loud call notes of Aramides along the edges of the neighboring lagoons.
